Lessons For A Newbie

I am sure that some of you have noticed the changes I have been making to the blog.  (I told you in my book that I always have a hard time deciding on a theme!)  I decided to go with something pretty simple for this blog, because there will be a lot of content and other material that I don’t want to distract from.

I have been working at setting up an account with MyBlogLog.  That is what my suggestion for you today is going to be.  Once you have gone through the guides, and got your Wordpress or Blogger blog set up, go and get a widget like the one I have put onto this page.  It is really cool, and it shows a list of people who have been to your blog, and gives it a more community feel for your readers.  Not to mention the traffic that you will get from MyBlogLog itself.

Every little bit of traffic you can get, and everything you can do to give your site a more relaxing, community feel is going to be a good thing.  So, go and putter around at MyBlogLog and set up an account.  They will walk you through what you need to do to put the widget onto your site.

Basically, you will need to download from the site a plugin to your computer.  Transfer that plugin to the plugin folder as demonstrated in the Wordpress setup guide, using your FTP program.  Then, you will go into the admin area, and activate the plugin, again as shown in the guides.  Make sure that your theme is widget ready, and there should be a “Widget” tab under the “Presentation” link.  Just drag the widget to where you want it in your sidebar, and then click the upper right corner to open the widget.  In another window, go back to MyBlogLog and go to set up how you want your BlogLog to appear on your site, then click to get the code.  Copy and paste the code into the open widget box on your site.  Save the changes, and then go and check it out on your site. 

It is pretty cool, I think anyway!  Let me know if you have any questions, and I will try to help you out.  Remember that I am just figuring this one out for myself, so I can’t promise to have all the answers!  But, it is something that I think is a nice feature to add to your site, to make you stand out a bit more.  Plus, once you have an account there, you can have your picture shown right here on this blog;-)
